Happy Holidays!

How do you feel right now? I’m feeling really peaceful. The hustle and bustle energy that Christmas seems to bring each year has died down, and I’m so relieved. Even though we have chosen not to carry on this tradition for at least five years now, I still feel the intense energy of this time of year. My husband Joe and I don’t buy “presents” for each other, and buy only one for Joey, our 14 year old. This year, we actually didn’t buy him one at all. It’s one of the best decisions we’ve made. The uncomfortable, unnecessary pressure of Christmas consumerism has dissolved almost completely.

I know that New Year’s Eve has yet to come, and I really encourage you to to let this tradition live on.…

How to make the best decision (hint: guts)!

That sick feeling I get in my “stomach” (or somewhere in that area) when I watch a scary movie, might not just be a feeling. It might be a decision being made, to never, ever watch that movie again. How can I make this conclusion? I have stopped watching scary movies since I became familiar with this churning feeling in my gut. The expression “gut decision” has more validity than many of us have been taught. Clean guts are the answer for making the best decision. Yes, we can think better, when it’s clear in there.

I skipped posting before or on Halloween, as I would generally rant about sugar. If it’s your first time visiting, it’s no secret that I am a huge advocate for ditching the most socially acceptable, more powerful than cocaine (eight times-research shows), disease causing drug on planet earth.

Freaky Friday the 13th Arctic Apple®

Are you superstitious? Does Friday the 13th make you wake up with your tail between your legs? I’ve always loved it because I was born on the 13th. It’s a great number, and who doesn’t love Friday? Don’t worry I know that it’s not Friday the 13th today, but the last was only a few months ago.

The first Friday the 13th for 2015 was in March, and it was freaky, no doubt. It was the day the GMO apple was approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration).

gmo apple

Why is the GMO apple freaky? It has nothing to do with Friday the 13th of course, despite the fitting approval date. GMO foods are freaky for many reasons.  There are thousands of studies to read as to why.

School lunch with a side of food

Cardboard crust with ketchup and plastic coating disguised as cheese. Maybe a few discolored green beans. The side “vegetable” was the closest thing to food on my plastic tray. This pretty much describes the pizza, and unbalanced meal I was served in middle school. Remember school lunch? Maybe you have kids, and it’s easy to recall just what a “school lunch” is.

I am a parent. My husband’s 13 year old son, Joey keeps us in the loop with what’s going on in public school lunchrooms. As of two years ago, he left the private school; where we prepared his vegetarian, sugar-free lunch each day. Even in the prestigious, cutting edge, Los Altos, Blue Ribbon School system, we’re witnessing discord. Joey’s back in public school where he’s questioning ethics in the lunch room.…

Marijuana juice for a happy marriage

I don’t smoke pot, and I really wanted to write about the amazing the couple’s Sensual Food event that my husband Joe and I hosted last week. But all I can think about is pot, so that’s what I’m ready to divulge.  As for smoking, I don’t think it’s wrong, I’m actually all about it. I am just not a happy person when I’m high. Do I think you should smoke pot (weed, refer, ganja, mary jane, marijuana)? Sure, but why not juice it?! Okay, so this may not be for everyone, but I have to share what I’m excited about, and I listened to a podcast today with Dr. William Courtney. This amazing man has been researching cannabis for decade, and is focused on the dietary uses of the non-psychoactive compounds of the plant (in other words the part that doesn’t get you high).…

Plastic flavored water, anyone?

Hiking uphill in 85° weather for eight miles delayed this article. Have you ever visited Yosemite National Park? I visited for the first time last week and it was mind blowing. I can’t believe I’ve lived only 3 hours away from this park for over four years. I would have gone once a month, if I had known how I would feel basking in the sun next to North America’s tallest waterfall.

Joe and I headed out with our good friends from Argentina, and a close friend of theirs who was visiting from Buenos Aires. There were five of us ready to conquer the trail at 8am on Monday morning. We packed veggie burgers, apples, nuts and raw cacao macaroons.…

Tongue scraping and 2 tools for sensuality

I used to wake up in the morning with bad breath. It’s embarrassing, actually. Because now, I realize that this is easily remedied. My dad has a very ridiculous sense of humor that not everyone understands. Keep in mind while you read on, that I share this bizarre sense of humor. When I was in high school, I lived with my dad, and he’d be up singing and being the bubbliest person alive at 5am. I’d wake up to get ready for school around 6am to him belting out Mary J. Blige or Seal (he loved soulful tunes). I was always entertained to say the least. Even though, at 16 years old everything pissed me off in the morning. I’d go into the bathroom, where I spent an hour before school, putting my hair in some elaborate up-do.…

Meeting the Food Babe

Have you ever seen an invention, and said to yourself, “Hey! I thought of that years ago! Why didn’t I act on it?!” I feel like this is so common in our world today, and this same scenario goes for business as well.  When my husband Joe discovered the Food Babe, I totally had this feeling.  Why wasn’t I courageous enough to start speaking about the food industry publicly?  What was I waiting for? How could I withhold this information for years?! This feeling only lasting a brief moment, because I instantly fell in love with Vani Hari, the Food Babe and decided that the only and best option was to join the food babe army.  I was so excited about what she is doing, that I felt compelled to stand on my desk and clap as I read through her blog articles, and watched her videos exposing the food industry.…

Spicy Secret Series #3: Cumin

julySpicy Secret Series #3: Cumin |  by: July Westhale

Are you familiar with cumin? Maybe you’ve tried Indian food? Cumin is commonly used in daals, beans, curries, and soups-this spice is a powerhouse of complex flavor. With both sweet undertones and just the slightest hint of smoke, cumin’s warm aroma can lure anyone to the table.

As it turns out, cumin’s undeniably irresistible nature goes even deeper than sensory engagement. A spice with a 5,000 year old history, it has been used for everything from medicine to skin care to part of the mummification process. Often associated with dishes from Vietnam, Mexico, and India, it was also kept in small bowls on many tables in Ancient Greece, should the need arise for additional flavor.…
