I’m excited! I’ve got something delicious for you.  It’s a treat for the ears this time ; )

This word, “sensuality,” that I use over and over certainly can be interpreted in a million different ways, as we all have our own unique way of understanding words and concepts.  Every word has a very specific feel and imagery that we connect with it.  Words like “sensuality” or “seduction” are most commonly linked to the word “sex.” Would you agree?  What is the first thought that comes when you read: sensuality?  Seduction?

“Seduction is an art form that is massively misunderstood. Seduction is not just a game to be played between lovers. It is a force, not a formula. When seduction is taken out of the context of the bedroom and brought into the playground of everyday life, everything changes. Seduction is no longer a manipulation technique, it is simply a power of attraction that is sourced by authenticity, not acting. Every person alive is a seductive force of nature, whether they know it or not.” -Kitty Cavalier

A true sensual foodist, Kitty Cavalier

How’s that for a definition of seduction?

My husband Joe and I dance with this idea of seduction in daily life.  More specifically, while we connect through food.  The art of seduction that we practice in our relationship is revealed in the kitchen, at a restaurant, in the produce section of the grocery store… and when I use this word, sensuality, it is to remind.  I am reminding you that being in the present moment is a gift to enjoy!

The DANCE! ...of seduction
The DANCE! …of seduction

We have this incredible, unique ability to experience food with all of our senses.  When we let ourselves fully experience this pleasure of being nourished through conscious eating…everything in life tastes so much sweeter.

Have you caught on to this yet?  There’s something incredible in your reach.  I don’t know if you’ve taken advantage of it yet-but the good news is, that it’s never too late.

Eat well and feel amazing.  Live life EVEN more fully than you do today. Thrive!

just doing a little eating well…and feeling AMAZING!

When you eat the food that completely nourishes every cell in your body; you thrive and feel full of energy and vitality and you have no physical barrier to stepping into that best version of you.  Start with simple, whole and raw foods if you’re scratching your head searching for ideas.

How do I know what my body needs to thrive?  All of my senses come alive!  Is there anything that you love eating?  You could live on it?  It gives you fuel?  The smell, taste, texture and sight of it feels nourishing?  Sensuality: The pursuit of physical pleasure.  Let’s take pleasure in eating!  Right?

I’ve had a lot of friends jokingly ask me, if I’ve had my daily kale.  Kale is a leafy green vegetable that I could honestly live on.  I have to confess, the nutritional benefits (if you enter “kale” into a Google search, the first hit is a site called “World’s Healthiest Foods”) really have me hooked psychologically.  When I eat it, I feel great…you’ve watched Popeye, right?  Kale is to Lana as spinach is to Popeye, without a doubt.  It ignites my magic powers.

Just me and my purple kale. Everyday.
Just me and my purple kale. Everyday.

It allows me to embody my inner seductress.

When what you’re eating allows you to feel great, life is so much easier.  When I feel fantastic in my body, it’s so much easier to lead a fantastic life.  This 100% includes my relationship with my partner… and everyone else!

Are you nourishing your inner seductress?

Does your food ignite all of your senses?

Lana:

Hi!  This is Lana, the Sensual Foodist, and I’ve got a question for you.  How do you feel about the word seduction? Would you consider yourself a seductress? In my content, I use the word sensuality and this idea of embodying you inner seductress.  We’re lucky because we have somebody here who is a full time seductress. Today, I’ve connected with my friend Kitty Cavalier who teaches “seduction as a spiritual practice!” I had the opportunity to do a call with her a couple days ago, on Monday, and I have to say, it’s amazing when you meet someone, and you feel like you already know them!

My husband Joe helped me set up a video call with Kitty and we had a good time laughing about my relationship with technology. So, in this call we’ll explore what Kitty does as a Seductress, and explore how this ties in with food and nourishment. So… Hellooo, Kitty!

Kitty:

Hello, thanks for having me on the call.

Lana:

Of course!  Kitty has her juice, and I have my tea-so we’re all ready.

Kitty:

I just want to let everyone know that I was a little late, and I texted Lana to say I’m blending the juice, because I knew if there was one excuse for lateness, she would accept that one.

Lana:

Well, juice is SUPER important!  That’s how the call works!

Kitty:

Exactly!

Lana:

This is actually perfect, because I’m wondering if you can tell me about a typical day in Kitty’s world and exactly what you do.

Kitty:

Yeah, thanks for asking!  My work is, that I teach seduction as a spiritual practice, and so when we hear that word, often what we associate it with is this kind of-a cool, calculating woman who is just kind of a nymphomaniac-and you know, manipulative, and all that kind of stuff. Or we think of a woman who’s described with raw sex appeal, and you know, this power over men and women.  There is truth to both of those stereotypes, but my work- what my life journey has really been about- is reclaiming that archetype as one of-really truly pure sacred power rather than one of-kind of a, controlling power. And so, in my day, like I was sharing before, I woke up and blended myself a beautiful green smoothie and my doggie is sitting at my feet curled up with a blanket, and I am preparing for a day of coaching clients and leading a tele-class, and tonight I’m teaching a dance class, so my day is usually filled with communicating with people virtually and then also in person, so it’s really fun!

Lana:

Awesome! You threw in there a dance class, and I think you’re talking about Qoya okay, yeah?

Kitty:

I am, yeah!

Lana:

Yay! Can you expand on that just a little bit?

Kitty:

Yes! Qoya is movement class that was developed by my friend Rochelle Scheick that is based on the idea that through movement we remember.  We remember that our essence is wise, wild, and free; and so what that means is that Qoya draws from feeling free, and references from different movement forms that we use in Qoya,  and yoga, the wildness of dancing, and the freedom that’s found in sensual movement. In addition to that, okay is…the only rule in Qoya is that if it feels good, that’s how you know you’re doing it right. So it’s a really pleasure based, I have to take some time to call it a workout, even though it’s a total work out, it’s really just coming together in community with other women and moving for the sake of it feeling good and feeling true in the body and when you have that sensation of truth and pleasure and joy in the body, it’s like you’re able to set that as north on your compass and move towards that in your life. Qoya has played an enormous role in my understanding and my development of myself as a seductress. In my work in seduction, it’s completely based around that concept that a seductress moves based on feeling rather than logic. And so the more tapped in, she is to use her sensual and part of herself that knows how to feel if something feels right rather than calculate and add it up, and that’s her magic.

Lana:

I love it, that’s so amazing and so in alignment with what you do.

Kitty:

It’s perfect.

Lana:

I love it. I do know a little about Qoya-I have a friend who teaches.  I also teach a dance modality called JourneyDance, which is quite different from Qoya, but… I totally love it.

Kitty:

Yeah, I love JourneyDance.

Lana:

That’s so exciting! Something else to connect on! So I want to go into the juicy part of seduction-I want to go into your story. You have an incredible story.  Your relationship with your own body…can you share your story and if it has impacted your relationship with food and where the journey has taken you?

Kitty:

Yeah, definitely! So my journey; kind of where I started-I was telling Lana this, the last time we spoke- when I grew up, I didn’t grow up thinking, I want to be a seduction teacher. When I grew up I wanted to be a vet or I wanted to be a nun, or I wanted to be a mom. I grew up in an isolated town in a very religious household. Anything having to do with the sensual, and sexual pleasure based kind of things-like those, I personally renounced them; and thought that in order to be good, I would just avoid that part of myself for my entire life, and how that transformed itself, in terms of my behavior is that when I was about 11 or 12 I started to develop an eating disorder that started off as bulimia, and it just began to grow and grow and kind of morphed into starving and bingeing and all those types of things, and rooted at that- It rooted in the eating disorder with this absolute hatred and repulsion towards my female body. And this is not something that I was not really able to identify at the time, but in looking back, what I realize is that it had really had nothing to do with my weight or whether or not my stomach was flat. Having a female body made me feel extremely vulnerable and extremely ashamed. Because I always associated the female body with being dirty and wrong. And so I moved out of that small town and into New York City. I started to meet people who-their definition of beauty, and their definition of success in the world etc. etc. was far different than what I knew in my very small town.  I was fascinated with these people who just, with women especially, who just had this sparkle, this radiance that was not dependent on whether or not they felt thin that day, or-you know, how old they were or whatever having to do with their outward appearance. I was fascinated by that because for so long in my life, I had always made that equation of course, never being able to satisfy it, because appearance never satisfies the deep longing that I’m describing. I followed that thread as far as it would take me and I started taking classes in sensuality and empowerment, and all of these different topics and which was a really really scary thing for me to do. But I did it anyway, and one of the things that I came upon was burlesque: a type of entertainment that is characterized by a striptease that’s usually anywhere from a 3 to 5 minute act that a woman or man does that’s really a form of performance art. But you know, to me, what I saw when I went to burlesque shows is I saw these women who had normal bodies, not what we associate with the “stripper body.” I want to be careful not to shame any kind of body.  I want to say that there’s not anything wrong or bad about a stripper body, but I had never seen a woman with back fat positioned as being a sex icon. The way that she is-in burlesque. Those things are transcended and it does not matter-where the performer is the creator of desire, rather than just being the object of desire. I found that extremely liberating. I started attending a lot of burlesque shows, and I started performing burlesque myself.  Which was a huge transformational moment for me, because it taught me that nothing on my exterior had to change in order to be sexy. All of the abuse that I had put my body through over the years; thinking that I had to be more disciplined or more rigid in order to get things that I wanted, you know-pretty much all of that evaporated; when you are standing on stage in a G-string and pasties under a spotlight! You know you really have nothing to hide.  Nothing left to hide.  The kind of climax of this story, is that-that experience of taking that wild risk of performing a striptease, even though I had all of that shame around my body, was really just a physical analogy for what I do now, which is that-it is our vulnerability that makes us most sexy. It is our deep, authentic truth that gives us our attractiveness.  It has very little to do with the sum of parts of our appearance, or one liners that we can throw out at a person or some acts that we can make a person believe about ourselves. Real true seduction is a centrifugal force that begins, and that operates from within us. Rather than outside of us. That’s a long answer to your question!

Lana:

No, it’s beautiful! Exactly what I was looking for.  I am wondering if you can tell us something juicy about you that nobody knows.

Kitty:

Ooh, I like that question. Well…. Something that’s juicy about me that nobody knows. I am a pretty open book. Well, something that only my dog knows, is that right now I am sitting here in a hot pink sweatshirt lounging on my white couch with no pants on. Doing this interview. Unless my neighbors can see in my window, but now you all know I like to do my interviews as naked as possible, but it is a little cold, so I have the hot pink sweatshirt. I feel very flash dance right now.

Lana:

Says the full time Seductress!  Perfect. Thank you for that! Exactly what we needed.  On that note: Can you give listeners one way to cultivate their inner seductress? The most important part of this call is YOU, the listener.   What is something that they can do?

Kitty:

Take off your clothes!  No, I am just kidding.  Actually, I am not kidding.  Here in NY-I know that you guys are in California, but here in NY, it is freezing!  Lately I’ve been spending a lot of time with my space heater on, just completely naked in my apartment, because you don’t spend a lot of time naked when you are in cold weather. Being naked is so important for feeling good and feeling connected to your body. But!  I digress!  Hmmm… “What is one way that listeners can connect to their inner seductress?” The number one way that I recommend that a woman get tapped into her inner seductress is:  Let’s do this together! You too, Lana!  Close your eyes…and we are going to bring your hand up to your head and begin to with your fingertips just very slowly and trace around your scalp, just feeling your hair move like the waves in the ocean and just feeling the pressure of your fingertips massage your head…and then taking those fingertips and then just very delicately, like an Olympic ice skater floats over the ice, allowing your fingertips to trace down the side of the face, tracing your exquisite jawline all the way down the neck and the throat, feeling the smoothness of the skin until you reach the collarbone, and then just tracing along that collarbone with your fingertips and however slow you are going right now, go twice as slow as that…just take a moment to feel everything…and when you are ready you can open your eyes!  That verbiage is something that we use a lot in Qoya; feel everything, it goes deep into feeling, that’s where I got my sensuality training. The reason that I suggest that type of exercise is that anything that a person can do to slow themselves down, and to tap into the sensation of feeling, that is going to tap them into their inner seductress. Because being a seductress, being sexy-is not a look.  It is not even an attitude-it is the sensation. What looks sexy on me is something that’s completely different than what looks sexy on you, or another woman. I think about my friend- she wears these sexy suspenders with pinstripe pants and a fedora hat and she struts around like she has a real masculinity to her sex appeal, and so what makes her so sexy is that she’s following the sensation of what feels sexy to her in the way that she walks, in the way that she communicates, dresses… For someone like me, I love playing with masculine and feminine and androgyny… and when I feel most sexy is when I am wearing a gown with nothing on underneath, and my hair is curled vintage style, and when I am moving like Jill on mad men, that is what feels sexy to me!  How we are able to cultivate that, and go into that is through slowing down and allowing yourself to connect to the sensual part of yourself, which is exactly what Lana does with food and with the connection between food and sensuality.  If you are having a stressful day and you just take a full 60 seconds to take one bite of a strawberry, and you tease yourself by looking at the strawberry and taking it away, and bringing it close to feel the electricity of it as it almost touches your lips and taking it away again, and giving it a little touch with your tongue, and just really taking a moment to savor the experience, any stress that you have will be worked out because seduction brings us into the present moment. Seduction and sensuality is all about living in the gift of our body, the gift of our life-our senses. That is where our deepest wisdom lives. The end!

Lana:
