Are you superstitious? Does Friday the 13th make you wake up with your tail between your legs? I’ve always loved it because I was born on the 13th. It’s a great number, and who doesn’t love Friday? Don’t worry I know that it’s not Friday the 13th today, but the last was only a few months ago.

The first Friday the 13th for 2015 was in March, and it was freaky, no doubt. It was the day the GMO apple was approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration).

Why is the GMO apple freaky? It has nothing to do with Friday the 13th of course, despite the fitting approval date. GMO foods are freaky for many reasons.  There are thousands of studies to read as to why.  Research shows that: GMOs are detrimental to the environment.

“GM crops and their associated herbicides can harm birds, insects, amphibians, marine ecosystems, and soil organisms. They reduce bio-diversity, pollute water resources, and are unsustainable. For example, GM crops are eliminating habitat for monarch butterflies, whose populations are down 50% in the US. Roundup herbicide has been shown to cause birth defects in amphibians, embryonic deaths and endocrine disruptions, and organ damage in animals even at very low doses. GM canola has been found growing wild in North Dakota and California, threatening to pass on its herbicide tolerant genes on to weeds.” ResponsibleTechnology.org

Another, more simple truth is, that we don’t know what effect tampering with nature will have down the road. I’m not a fan of genetically modified foods. This new GMO apple isn’t quite hot off the press, but I’m adamant to spread the news. Look out for the “Arctic Apple®,” that was created to not turn brown. This means that when the apple should be showing signs of decay after hours-or days on the counter, it will still appear to be freshly cut. You’ll be deceived and end up eating a rotten apple. Does that seem a bit strange, or is it just me? Not only is it strange, but it’s unnecessary because a squirt of lemon juice will do just the same thing for just the right amount of time.

For a fun science experiment, this apple is fine and dandy. As for putting it in my mouth? I’d rather not. My apple experiences have been swell thus far, and I’d like to keep it that way.

What do you think about GMO? How do you like your apples? Do you have kids? This new fancy GMO, Arctic Apple® may just end up in school lunches.

Please do spread the news if you realize that there’s a reason why GMO foods are banned in numerous developed countries, including Japan, Australia, and every country in the European Nation.
