Protein Shakes aren’t just for Bodybuilders

Happy New Year!

How was New Year’s Eve for you? Did you set intentions or make resolutions? I love the energy of pivotal moments like 11:59 on December 31… Incredible shifts and transformations are swirling around in my life, and it’s taking some effort to embrace them. I am enjoying the idea of a clean slate as I dive into 2016.

Joe and I are in awe on a daily basis while PsychedelicTimes.com is rapidly growing and evolving. It’s taking energy and focus that we’re offering with anticipation. As if this wasn’t enough on the menu for this first month of 2016, we’re also nearing the launch date of a book I’m co-authoring! This means we are implementing some new hacks in the kitchen and condensing time, for a few meals each week.…

Argentine Locro for Burning Man

The title says it all! I’m on my way to Burning Man, and will be playing in dust for the entire next week. Life is moving at a dizzying speed since I started school, and when I settle myself and sit down to eat, all I can think about is Vegetarian Locro (Argentine Hominy Stew).

Last week, my friend from Argentina had his mother visiting. She made us dinner. It was a totally oralgasmic meal. My friend is a strict vegan, so his mother made this traditional Argentine dish just for him. She left out the usual five animals limbs and parts.

I fell so deeply in love with this meal that I MUST share the recipe. I did not make this myself yet, which means I didn’t change anything or put my own spin on it.…

30 second dinner

There’s no good reason to spend hours in the kitchen every day. I highly recommend an hour or two-maybe once a week? Otherwise,

[Tweet “I’m all about fast, efficient and nourishing. “]

My husband Joe and I were traveling this summer and we wanted all the time we could get on the beach in Miami (we dream about that bathwater frequently). In other words, we wanted to spend as little time inside as possible. However, south Florida is nothing like the San Francisco Bay area. The sensual food scene is sparse. We opted for preparing our own at home. We rent through airbnb when we travel and always look for a decent kitchen. This spot couldn’t be beaten.

We’re home reminiscing already.…

Recipe for Savory, Nutty Italian-inspired Crackers

Crackers can be addicting finger foods. Anything in bite-sized form with a delectable crunch always gets me excited. I love crunchy and savory. These crackers are made with fresh basil, so they’re even more delicious. I believe that my serious cracker snacking days were when I was young. I’d sit with a box of Annie’s Cheddar Bunnies and go to town (I’m sounding super Wisconsin right now aren’t I)? For me, there’s this childhood nostalgia associated with crackers.

I have to be honest, there are a few strings attached here. This recipe includes almond meal. Yes, you

can purchase almond meal at the grocery store, however!  My boatload of almond meal, chillin’ in the freezer is from the gallons upon gallons of almond milk I’ve made.…

Fireworks in your mouth

fourthof JUly

For a while when I was in high school, and in my early college years, I was an activist obsessive. I wanted to take a stand on, well, everything. I wasn’t happy about fireworks and their effect on the environment. I’ve matured now and have learned that appreciation is a better emotion than anger. I’ll just appreciate the beauty of this spectacular day than be angry and fight against it. I’ve found even more ways to love Independance Day, which means that I am incorporating the holiday spirit into my meals. I truly believe that everyday should include a an explosion of tasty fireworks on the palette, but in honor of the fourth of July-we have a recipe to share with a little red, white and blue (and of course green too)!…

How to make chia pudding

While Joe and I were in Mexico working as Recovery Coaches at Crossroads Treatment Center, we had this glorious kitchen to play in.  We had the day before New Year’s Eve off, so we spend some time creating some videos to share with you!  We were very motivated, ambitious and directed.  We just couldn’t find it within ourselves to be serious.  Here’s our attempt(s) at creating a short video to show you how to make chia seed pudding: (feel free to watch this ridiculousness, or just skip right on down to the super simple recipe)

My husband Joe LOVES chia seed pudding. I pretty much make it just for him.  When we traveled down to Mexico…we prayed that we would make it across the border with our huge box of produce from Ocean Beach People’s organic food market.…

Probiotic-rich Cheese recipe for your belly

julyThanksgiving is over, but the Holidays have just begun! We’re in full swing now and it’s a great time to consider what’s going on in our guts.  Yep. Totally serious. I want to talk about your gut.  It’s a very important subject.  The happy little guys (called flora) that helps us digest and assimilate our food can be damaged during holiday drinking and overeating.  If you’re not doing either of these activities, bravo!  If so, let’s get some probiotics in do some work!

This article from the lovely July includes a great recipe to use for the holidays.  I don’t advocate using much dairy (because I’m all about high quality or none at all), but read on for a few tips if you’re open to going that route.

Halloween loving and pumpkin carving!

Did you carve a pumpkin this year?! If you did, congrats on being fun and playful. If not, don’t tell me you’re too old. We’re never too old to carve pumpkins!

There’s still time to get your pumpkin carving on!

Even if you’re a grinch of Halloween (I’ll admit that I’ve been know to get a little grinchy during the Christmas holiday) pumpkin carving is always a great idea.

Why am I all about this pumpkin carving business?!  Two main reasons that I’ll elaborate on: inner and outer nourishment.

For my husband Joe and I, opportunities to get messy, silly, and playful together are rarely passed up.  Diving into a big, sticky, squishy pumpkin is full of messy surprises.  Get creative!  …

Spicy Secret Series #2: Turmeric

Spicy Secret Series #2: Turmeric |  by: July Westhale

Turmeric is the spice that keeps it flowin’…and what, exactly, does it keep flowing?  Do, read on 😉

This bright orange spice is a member of the ginger family, and has been used for over 4,000 years to increase health and treat ailments.  In Southeastern parts of Asia, it’s used to treat everything from gas to neurological degeneration.

Recently, turmeric has become popularized in the United States for its curative powers, which have been shown to counteract the damaging effects of the American diet. Used as a digestive aid for breaking down beans, proteins, fats, and grains, this miracle spice has been introduced into Western pharmacies to help maintain intestinal flora (which sugars, grains, bad fats, and antibiotics often destroy), as well as improving the elimination of toxins and purifying blood.…

Candy bars are no longer a sin

emiliaCandy Bars are no longer a sin |  by: Emilia Wysocka-Treder

Did you ever eat Bounty candy bars as a child (or last week)? How about Almond Joy? We all know these sweet treats are delicious, but the alternative, made with real food and whole food ingredients-isn’t even a comparison. If you ever miss this candy bars, get ready for exciting news: you can make them in your kitchen with only 6 ingredients!

At the beginning of last year, I made a big decision to change my diet. It was time to give up the things that weren’t giving me the energy I needed to teach Pilates and just feel great every day.

I’m currently making more conscious decisions about the food that I eat and candy bars certainly aren’t on my shopping list.…
